iPhone 13 is not worth the hype

Adding to its collection of overpriced phones, Apple launched its new iPhone 13 series introducing three new models: Mini, Pro and Max. The iPhone 13 is similar to the 12 in all ways except for the camera shape.

Launched on Sept. 17, Apple’s special event on You Tube had 18 million views which is surprising because not much about the iPhone 13 is special except perhaps the battery. When it comes to the display, connectivity, processor and camera, the 13 is not worth the money.

Display

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 both have a screen size of 6.1-inch super retina XDR display that uses OLED screens with a resolution of 2532×1170.

The max brightness of both the iPhones is the same as 1200 nits, due to its HDR display.

Featuring the same flat-edge design, Apple did no work on the phone’s outer body.

Both have the same wide colour gamut and haptic touch, making all equal in the display section.

Battery

The only good thing about an iPhone 13 is its 15 bionic chip which gives it more battery life and efficiency.

Apple says the iPhone 13 has a video playback of 19 hours whereas the 12 can handle up to 17 hours.

Both iPhones are fast-charging and can charge up to 50 per cent in 30 minutes.

Connectivity and processor

Both iPhone 12 and 13 have 5g connectivity. This includes support for mm Wave 5g connectivity in the United States as well as sub-6 ghz 5g in other countries.

Both the phones have the same type-C to lightning iPhone regular cable, with no upgrade in the adapter’s power.

Where iPhone 12 is powered by Apple’s A14 bionic chip, with one of the fastest processors, the iPhone 13 has the newest A15 making it 50 per cent faster than its predecessor.

Both the chips feature a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and six efficiency cores. Both also feature a 4-core GPU and a 16-core neutral engine.

Camera

The most anticipated feature of every newly released iPhone is its camera.

The iPhone 13 rear camera includes a 12 MP main with a focus of 1.6 and 12 MP ultra-wide focus being 2.4.

The iPhone 12 provides better megapixels with a 16MP ultra-wide and 12 MP main camera.

The front camera specification for both the iPhones remains the same bringing them to 12 MP with a true depth focal point of 2.2.

Common features in both iPhone cameras include a panorama, 2x optical zoom out, digital zoom up to 5x and night mode.

Ultimately, Apple has done a little fixing with its battery life. The A15 bionic chip, and a little faster processor, make the 13 even more expensive than the 12 just for a jump in storage.

The iPhone 13 starts at $799 CAD while the 12 starts at $699 CAD and is available in all Apple stores, in different colours like red, blue, pink, midnight and starlight.

The 13 is just a newly branded product which is over-hyped.

For some new colours and minor tweaking internally, the new iPhone 13 is not worth the money.
