DC reports first COVID-19 outbreak

Durham College has announced its first COVID-19 outbreak on campus along with another unrelated case.

The two new reported cases bring the total number of COVID-19 cases at Durham College to 43 since September. Ontario Tech has only reported two positive cases on campus in the same time frame.

The first individual identified was last on campus in the H-Wing of the Gordon Willey building on Jan. 20. and is related to a previously reported case on campus.

Durham Region Health Department (DRHD) has defined an outbreak as two or more related cases between students or faculty “where at least one could have reasonably acquired their infection on campus”, according to a news release.

The other unrelated case was located in the A-Wing on Jan. 13.

DRHD has deemed the H-Wing is safe for campus use again after DC thoroughly disinfected the area in addition to daily cleaning protocols, such as cleaning high-touch surfaces.

Both cases have been classified as low risk to the campus community by DRHD and everyone who could have come in to contact with the outbreak has been contacted by them and is currently quarantining.
