Construction worker dead, another injured at Ontario Tech

A worker is dead after a five-tonne concrete slab fell at a building under construction on the campus of Ontario Tech University at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at 40 Founders Dr. in Oshawa.

According to media reports, another worker suffered a shoulder injury and one of the victims was transported from the scene by Air Ornge, according to a tweet from Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS).

In a tweet last night, Ontario Tech president Dr. Steven Murphy said: “We grieve the death of a construction worker, killed accidentally while working on our new building today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

Ontario Tech tweeted that The Office of Campus Safety supported first responders on the scene and are “working with police as they investigate.”

The Director of Campus Safety, Tom Lynch, declined to comment on the situation.

DRPS was not immediately available for comment, and reports indicate the Ministry of Labour will be investigating the incident.
